Social Innovator Camp

Sessions 1: July 3rd - 21st 2023
Session 2: July 24th-Aug 11th 2023
Camper age category: 12-17
Camp hours: 9am-4pm
Camp Duration: 3 weeks
Camp Fees: $2,000
Optional Meal Plan: $100/week
*50% of camp fees required upon registration, the remaining two weeks prior to camp commencement.
Step 1 - Literature Review -synthesize existing research and identify an unmet need.
Step 2 - Identifying the problem - narrow down the issues and choose 1 problem to examine and solve.
Step 3 - Evaluating solution - Use design thinking strategies to evaluate solutions.
Step 4 - Field work
Step 5 - Writing the research paper
Step 6 - Presenting the paper to scholars and expert.
Session 1: At the end of the three week session the student will have completed a mini-research paper and created a rocket pitch for his/her new innovation.
Session 2: At the end of the three week session the student will have completed a mini-research paper and created a rocket pitch for his/her new sustainability solution.
Outcomes: Students will learn to identify a problem, research the issues, determine the big goal, develop project ideas and create an action plan. Students will then create their elevator pitch and launch their ad.
Project 1 - Mushroom Farming - examine mushroom growth under two different environments
Project 2 - Floriculture (Hibiscus and Camelia) - Understand the benefits of Hibiscus and Camelia for human health and cosmetics. Examine the variations in different growing conditions.
Project 3. Algae and technology
Project 4. Plant growth in Calcium Carbonate Substrate - Examine growth of plants using Mussel powder, Eggshells and compare.

The ideal applicant is focused, purposeful, and wants to make a difference. Students interested in Entrepreneurship, Technology Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, Agriscience, biology, chemistry, cognitive science, consumer behavior, climate change, circular economy, environmental science, engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, natural cosmetics, food science, health and well-being, psychology and will gain valuable experiences to connect to college programs.
Description: Engage in 4 key Entrepreneurial activities— Learn Babson’s Entrepreneurial Thought and Action. You will work in teams and learn about the Entrepreneurial mindset, the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development, identify problems and opportunities. Using the U.N. Sustainable Goals as the framework, you will learn the scientific method and engage in innovative research.

Field trips to local farms and county fairs, colleges.
Outcomes: Students will become change agents. At the end of the five week session students will have completed a mini-research paper and created a rocket pitch for your new innovation. In addition, it will help you Build your personal story for college applications. Each student will receive a Babson College Entrepreneurship Certificate and opportunities to present at their Shark Tank events and increased eligibility for college scholarships.
Capstone Projects
Project 1 - Screens to Nature - - Learn to make bio assays to determine the antifungal, anti-viral and antioxidant properties of plants. ( no change)
Project 2 - Sustainable Consumer products - Learn skills to evaluate consumer products. With sustainable sourcing and human health in mind come up with one innovative solution.
Project 3 - Environmental Science - Examine the impact of human lifestyle practices on the environment (air, water, soil). Learn skills that integrate lifestyle choices and reduce the carbon footprint.
