How to Be an Environmentalist When You Can’t Get Off The Couch

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

Some days, it is really difficult to care about the earth. When we are feeling mentally and emotionally low, our brains have a tendency to self-sabotage, starting to beat us up for all of the things we’re not accomplishing. The more upset we get with ourselves, the more impossible it becomes to get off the couch, and the more we feel like the worst person (and environmentalist) in the WORLD!

But here’s the good news. We don’t have to be Marvel superheroes to help save the world.

We just have to be ourselves.

The creators of the United Nations 17 Sustainability Goals understand how self-defeated individuals can feel in the fight for building a better planet. That’s why the United Nations recently published a piece on their website titled “The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving the World.”

They give 4 levels of earthcare action that increase in involvement based on how confident and energetic you feel. These actions are simple and easy to fit into your day-to-day – and the best part is these “normal” actions you take actually DO make you an earthcare superhero! No action is too small when it comes to helping build a better planet. Everyone has an equally important part to play, from the couch-dwellers to the policy-makers.

We suggest printing the PDF of these “lazy superhero” actions and hanging them up where you can see them. Let this remind you that, on days you can’t get off the couch, you can still be an environmental superhero.
